I think I just watched someone get caught trying to scam a non-rev ticket

I was flying BDL-MSP-LAX with my family tonight.

BDL-MSP was oversold and it paid out $600 to get a volunteer, even though they only needed one

MSP-LAX was oversold and they were paying $400 per volunteer. (I think they ended up needed 5 or 6)

On the MSP-LAX flight two of the people trying to get on the flight were non-revs. I overheard quite a bit of the conversations between the two ladies and the GA and I’m hoping someone can shed some light on what was happening.

They started their day at JFK and were trying to get to LAX. When they were questioned on how and why they were flying non-rev one of the women stated her cousin worked for the airline, but when they asked for her cousins name she said “I don’t know his name” When they pulled up their data from their JFK-MSP boarding pass, the GA stated that the person was in retired statues from a defunct airline? (I may have heard that part wrong) The Red Coat now helping them seemed a bit puzzled by what she was seeing and hearing and later said they were the “wrong priority” something along the lines of an S4 vs. an S3. The Red Coat was definitely giving off the vibe that something was wrong.

In the end they did not get seated on the flight and the Red Coat pulled one of the women aside to speak privately to her.

Were they scamming a seat? Did they maybe buy a non-rev ticket off of ebay or something?
