I don't know if it's specific to each chain or individual hotels. On a recent trip to NYC, I did name your own price and got the Sheraton. At checkin the lady asked for my spg # but none of my charges ever were credited. Same with the Waldorf, which I booked at a daily rate through Priceline (not opaque). At checkin she recognized my status and offered the perks (a couple of free bottled waters) but points never posted for any charges and when I emailed Hilton they said you have to book through Hilton.com to be eligible to earn points.
