Wait around too long and you are left with no place to store bags on full flights. Flying in first is not as nice if your bag is flying in coach!
That is the trade-off and is a different decision for each person. Because most elites don't want to check their carry on, it bodes well for those who want to hang back to try for an UG. Once I had to check my roller bag, but I took all valuable and fragile items out of the case while I was waiting for the last person to not arrive at the gate
