I usually value points/miles by calculating the lowest redemption value i can get, not the highest. The reason is that, your example, i would never spend out of my pocket 10K for a trip to Thailand.

Your point is valid. When we travel to Thailand (or internationally in general) on our own dime, we upgrade w/ certs. or miles. We would/could never pay out of pocket for business or first class seats.
