Two questions:
1) After 20k miles (and I assume that includes the bonus for C class travel) should I then stop putting miles into that account since redemption will be difficult?
2) The program is only for passengers over the age of 12. Neither of my kids will be 12 - and since they always travel with me, they don't need their own *G perks, I assume, so should we just deposit the miles in an account that has good redemption, like US?
No, the program is for people over the age of 2 - at least it was when I signed up my nephew who was 8 at the time. I personally would get *G for your kids because requalifying is easier than getting *G from scratch, and A3 is probably going to tighten up *G qualification some time in the future...
As for using the 20k miles and then stopping, you would essentially be deciding not to use those miles - if you are gonna use A3, you might as well credit all your miles so that they will accumulate and you can get a good award... Also, using the *G benifits from A3 and crediting to a different program creates all kinds of IT issues with the airlines' systems.
