Yes. As of right now you aren't eligible for upgrades at all, other than purchased upgrades at the airport.

By combining your PNRs you will both be eligible for upgrades based on her status, at 72 hours.

The only downside is that she will not get an upgrade if there aren't two seats available if you link your PNRs.
