After wasting an hour trying various combinations, I e-mailed Delta out of frustration.

Here is the reply (sent after 15 minutes):

I know, I know. First rule of the DL forum... Attack the OP. If I want an F ticket I should pay for one. Oh, wait. I'm trying to. And I realize that 4 people here will pull up F awards for "the first dates they tried" at 50K. That's still no excuse for the award calender being broken.

I also know this is rehashing an oft discussed topic, but it's worth it now and then to bring it to the forefront. Perhaps award calender improvements will be announced with the 2012 SkyMiles program.
^+1 I have to agree, had the same issue before trying to book low level BE TPAC flights. Calender showed low level available but when I went to check flights it came back as medium every time! Even called the PM line while looking right at the award calender showing low level and had several different agents tell me there was no low level available.

Try your luck by calling an agent, you may find a good one eventually that can help you out. Just don't stop trying, keep calling to you find the solution you want. With me, I finally went to the local DL ticket office here in Manila and was able to book 2 low level BE tickets on KE within 5 minutes, this was after calling the PM line and begging them to please check ST partners, especially KE, and was told every time no low level was available.

It just should not be this hard to use your SM when you want to.
