Yes, that's indeed how it works on the A330. Seats in the J cabin were blocked on the seat map but could be reserved if you called (not sure if either was linked to MPC/OW status), but got Y service. It's a 2.5hr flight, so not a major hardship, and I suspect loads are light anyway.
UO offers J for this route. Aside from the UO A330, I believe all nonstop international service ex-OKA is narrowbody for the moment.
