I do the same. I've had TSOs start to do a bag check before identifying the bag owner - that doesn't happen now that I lock my carry-on(s) before submitting them to the x-ray.

I also keep my 'on board' items in a separate small bag and lock my carry-on before stowing in the overhead on longhauls where I might sleep. Unlikely, but I don't want someone to realize I'm asleep and use the opportunity to get in my bag. If a seatmate gets into my 'on board' bag while I'm sleeping, there won't be much there - toothbrush, book, earphones - but no ID/cash/cards.
