My recent GH Singapore stay

Since the last post is over six months old, I figured I would provide a brief comment on my stay two days ago.

The good:
- Ideal location at the intersection of Scotts and Orchard, with superb shopping and amazing people watching
- Very courteous service highlighted by the Concierge staff and Faisal in particular
- Nice gardens, outside pool and fitness facility
- Well appointed rooms with plenty of towels and linens

The bad:
- Monolithic architecture and an impersonal feel to the common areas
- "Spa" in tough shape. The whirlpools in the men's locker rooms smelled badly
- Restaurants were okay. Probably very good by international standards, but Singapore is the foodie capital of the world. A meal at any of the hotel's restaurants would be a major missed opportunity to dine at one of dozens of memorable spots off-property

The ugly:
- After about 8PM every night many hotel guests would come back arm-in-arm with prostitutes from nearby Orchard Towers. In fact, one of the hotel's own bars (the Brix Bar) is well known as a major pickup spot for prostitutes from all over the world. I am sure the hotel does not condone this in any way, but neither does it seem to do much about it.

I am far from a moralist, but I found the constant influx of "love couples" to be a little over the top (fortunately my family wasn't with me on this stay).

I have both SPG and Hyatt points. If you do as well I would highly recommend the St. Regis, which is also on Orchard but a few blocks further away and miles ahead in every respect. The point levels required are fairly equal to those for the Grand Hyatt.
