I think this is more a case of TK's global ambitions than anything else. It is pretty hard for any carrier to maintain dominance on one route into another carrier's hub.
As for BOM (and India, generally) direct US-India routes are money pits. The distances ruin the economics and the yields don't make it up. DL was smart to get out when they did, rather than throwing good money after bad like AA did for years. Perhaps the 787 changes things, but even then, I doubt we will see significant nonstop US-India service and what service we see will not be hugely profitable, at least for a while.
