I have done this on trips of longer than 7 days for returning items home especially if I am shopping. I just drop clothes and items I don't need for the remainder of the trip in the mail. It makes lugging the main bag around a lot easier. I don't do it for the trip out though. I need to keep my bag light enough to hoist over my head for trains, planes and buses if necessary.
