Standing by for an earlier flight on a non-flex ticket is a North American concept that doesn't apply as a general rule here in Europe.

As David-A suggests. it doesn't hurt to ask, especially if it's in the airline's interest to accommodate your request. BA flights will probably be rammed if there are many IB cancellations.
