is it absolutely necessary to get a "Canadian Insurance ID Card" to drive to Canada? I'm currently traveling in Buffalo, NY and wanted to make a brief trip across the border in my car.

my insurance company sent the card out to me overnight, but due to a weather issue, FedEx won't be able to deliver it to me in Buffalo until Monday. Will I get in trouble if I drive to Canada tomorrow(Sunday) for only a few hours and return to Buffalo in the afternoon?
