Hi Islandgirl, the beauty of miles redemptions is that you can book two one-way tickets for the same price as a return. So, that means you can book the outbound as soon as it's available and then the return once it's available.

The other strategy you could adopt is to watch the fares leading up to the flights and if you find a really good deal you can cancel the redemptions (if >1 day) and book with cash in the knowledge that you have the redemption bookings as your fall back.
