Even if there is no wi-fi on the flight, you can still use your own once you are at altitude. There is nothing special about the gogo wifi signal on flights, its' just the same type as a regular wifi access point. There is no special shielding or modifications to protect the plane from gogo. I'm sure plenty of people accidentally or purposely leave their wireless on for their phones or tablets onboard, so its not really anything new either.
