Then when I click it back on it seems to run very slowly, and the boarding pass screen won't scroll. It then came back to life. Between the gate and plane I tried pressing the top power button again, and the screen switches off, and then the phone won't come back to life, completely black screen for 60 seconds before it comes back to life and runs very slowly. The after the flight it's fine again.

It seems to happen only with a current, about to fly boarding pass, so I wonder if it's checking for updates or something? Although sometimes it feels like it's the PIN check, and it's blocking until it's decided if it needs to ask for your login for the day.
I have had this happen on both of my last two flights. Between the gate check and the aircraft the iPhone goes blank and won't come back to life. Somewhat embarrassingly at CPH last night I had to stand in the forward galley until it came back to life.

I have also noticed that when I leave the app on the boarding pass page itself the phone seems to get very hot (and maybe this is a cause of the "shutdown"). I'm at the stage now where I'm tempted to go back to paper BPs where I can.
