Yeah, that 'note in the itinerary' is about as helpful as the FA announcement when your incoming is delayed, connections are desperately tight, late at night, FA says: "The connecting flight GAs know you're on this flight and this flight has been delayed. However, it is not our policy to hold flights for delayed pax". Yikes, that was 'helpful'!
Also, when I book SQ itineraries, it is possible to add (or call and ask them to add) an informational segment that shows which domestic flight you are arriving on. The segment will actually show up when you bring up your reservation on their website. Not sure if UA has the ability to do something similar, and not sure if it guarantees anything.
