Dan, be sure to check out The Antique House Restaurant I or II while in CNX. The atmosphere is quite nice in an old, huge historic house with unique local, live music at No. I. I can vouch for the excellent food there. However, I've heard that II is even better than I. I just kept returning to I!

Check either out if you've time. The Antique house is no more than a 15 minute walk from The Night Bazar and/or The Chiang Mai Plaza Hotel - which is the ideal and prolly the best place to stay in CNX IMHO - although I did not stay there. The CMP has a very nice bkfst4free. If you only want to spend 750 Baht per nite there is Peoples Place, a little local hotel 1/2 block from the CMP. Very basic but clean and OK with A/C, but without bkfst for that rate. But you can walk to the CMP for bkfst. The airport in BKK is the best place to book the CMPH, comes to about 1/2 of walk up rates. Excellent food at the AH and so very, very cheap. I think I spent about $6 on most visits, perhaps about $12 when I went 'all out.'
BTW, I do not like the Westin Chiang Mai as it has a very old looking, dreary, dark lobby, and it's off the beaten path from the Night Bazar. It is located next to a filthy, smelly River.
You'll have a great time. I love CNX! I could live there, easily!
