Sometimes it helps to be completely clueless. I have brought several wooden items back from South Africa, including a giant carving made on a door that is about 50 cm x 70 cm in size. It never once occurred to me that this might be a problem. I wrote "souvenirs" on my customs form and walked right through the customs area without stopping. No one said anything or asked me to open up the huge package I was hauling.
