Part of it has to be due to luck (i.e. lack of traffic) and part due to a padded schedule. Look at the time it takes any time to reach it's first station and then compare it to the time it takes the train going the other direction to go between the same two stations and you can see how big the pad is.
Amtrak does have permission to do 110 MPG on the track that it owns between Kalamazoo and Porter, but it depends in part on what equipment they're using at the time.
