A-B-A or A-B-C is irrelevant, transit is transit. You are taking a flight out of the country within Xhrs of arriving is transit, for countries with TWOV.
And at least in the case of China, there is a difference between A-B-A (TWOV prohibited) and A-B-C (TWOV sometimes possible), and the time limit also depends on the "B" airport! This is a very complex issue that depends on a lot of factors. I had to do a few hours of studying before feeling confident about my TWOV at PVG.
