This is true for gifts from one individual to another, but (generally) not true for corporations.
OK, correction noted. But I still don't think an airline upgrade on a paid ticket is a "gift" from the corporation, any more than a store that is having a 20% off sale is giving all of its customers a cash "gift" of 20% of the purchase price.
