I think the real danger is when there is a note. In college some guys I knew borrowed something from the chem lab which they put on money accompanied by notes. The chemical stained the fingers of anyone who picked up the money a dark purplish color.

I don't remember what the notes said or what their point was, but I saw at least half a dozen people whose hands were marked by either greed or naivete.
