What mess was created? They published two ways to qualify for Platinum. Nothing has changed there. They have now published some additional benefits for those that go beyond. They also published some new benefits for all Platinum and all Golds. It isn't a mess. It is just some changes and improvements to the program. Sure some people are frustrated just as people are frustrated when airlines raise the number of miles you need for an award.
