It depends on the airport. AA is very strict at SFO. There is an AA sizer right before the TSA line, and the agent makes there will not let you though. The agent there makes you show your boarding pass whether or not you want to use the elite line, even if you have to show it again when you get up to TSA.
I am not sure if this agent stops VX passengers too, though, which share the terminal and the line.
