Righting a credit mistake by cancelling oldest cards

I cancelled some of my oldest AMEX cards due to a churn last year; and my average length of credit history has fallen by 50%!

I can and will cancel some of my new cards; but is it possible to reopen some of my older cards to restore their impact on my credit history? Or did I just make a big mistake that I'll have to be careful about in the future...

thanks
