There used to be more restaurants (some of them were gone for good when we're there last time) inside the mini-mall/supermarket, not sure if the (imported) coffee shop w. unique pastries is still there (has its dining section) - a bit pricey. When we had relatives visiting from France, we took them for lunch on their last day in the Big Apple, picked up goodies, and "send" them home via EWR with "bento" meal boxes to go for their flight & they loved it.
The Japanese bookstore and mini-shops across the way were barely surviving a few years ago as we knew some of the min-stores/booths inside had "going out of business" signs up.
You're welcome. FYI, I saved at least $7.00 (over Brooklyn prices) buying gas at Hess in Weehawken.
In terms of the Mitsuwa "complex," the bookstore is still going as is a cosmetics shop (Shisheido, I believe). There are one or two vacant shops.
The inside of Mitsuwa is completely full. If by coffee shop you mean the place to the left of the entrance, I've never had anything there but it's still open. My girlfriend is French and a few months ago we had an incredible laugh when we saw a sign in Mitsuwa announcing the forthcoming special appearance of a chef who would make crêpes. To make this French specialty, they were flying in a Japanese chef from Tokyo.
Inside Matsushima (unless there was another restaurant in the same spot) on the left side there used to be a display saying they made the first class meals for CO for flights from EWR to Japan.
