I've had good luck using xe.com to transfer money US<->UK without fees. Lloyds didn't charge me to receive funds, and I get the money to xe.com via ACH. For UK->US, I get the money to their clearing house via the usual faster payments sort code/account number scheme and they get it into the US account via ACH.
