If you are going to spend all or mostly all of your time on the strip, I say skip the rental car.

Personally, I never drive in Vegas. However, sometimes friends have cars. Either they rent them or they actually drive into Vegas. So, I have found myself in personal cars a fair amount. In general, I think it can be a PITA. Even as a passenger. For the driver, they really need to know their way around. In lots of hotels, it's not always possible to head on the direction on the strip you want to when you leave the property. In many cases, you can only head one way. If you have to go the opposite way, you better know how to easily get going the opposite way. Knowing the "back roads" and shortcuts and what not helps out a lot here.

The other issue is park or valet. Personally, I generally don't like the self park. I'm lazy. I don't like to walk more than I already have to in the giant casinos. I don't like hunting for a spot. I don't like remembering where the car was parked. You can valet to avoid that, but then you have to deal with the valet. Sometimes the places are full and won't accept cars for non-hotel guests. Lots of times, you have to wait around for the valet to come to you when you pull up. Then there is getting the car when you leave. I've had some long ... waits.

If you are drinking? you better have a designated driver. That won't ever be me!!

Are cabs spendy? Yup.. they are. But they offer a convenience. Drop you off. pick you up. Even waiting in a cab line to get a cab is usually offset by valet waits, self park times, etc. etc.

So, I say avoid the car. Unless you want to spend some time going way off strip.
