For example.... the LAX-CLT flight was 100% full, so the gate agent asks people to gate-check their carry-on bags. However, she marks the tag with "MIA" because the passenger is connecting to the CLT-MIA flight. Does this mean the passenger won't have to to pick up the bag at the gate in CLT and it will automatically go all the way to the CLT-MIA flight? If so, does the bag show up at the gate area in MIA or come out of the baggage claim area?

In this case it means the bag will be picked up at baggage claim in MIA.
