I agree with you. I have had cars in Europe for extensive periods and I have driven in Italy, although most recently with a contract that did not permit me to take the vehicle into Eastern/Central European countries, so I had to be careful when I got lost outside of Trieste.
However, I sense that the OP is not an experienced European traveler
and could find the autopista, big cities, motorbikes, winding mountain roads, and narrow streets in old walled villages to be extremely
challenging. There's also the plan to drive for wine tasting.
