We went to Europe in Sept. stayed there for 3 months rented/leased a car the whole time drove through nine countries and NEVER had any problems and saw so many things you could see if you traveled on a train...So I say rent a car when you get to Italy and see the complete Italy or as much as you can with the time you have....
