Actually, to follow the analogy, it would be like NatWest renaming itself 'Pound Sterling'.
(It is not as if Barclays accounts are denominated in 'barclays', they are denominated in pounds.)
Why have they done this? My guess is that the Avios project has further transformation to go.
However what is very bad is that they have caused so much confusin needlessly.
People in the UK do not understand it.
people outside the uk do not understand it.
And when you look at Avios.com it doesn't have an explanation that it is a another uk scheme on the front page, but it is only actually open to people with uk addresses, so people with BA and/or IB accounts are confused too.
