Did you read the link to the Qantas website (in blue)? It says:
"Travel to and from Australia
From 31 March 2007, the Australian Government introduced enhanced security screening measures for International travel to and from Australia.
This involves limiting the amount of liquids, aerosols and gels that can be taken through the security screening point for passengers who are flying;
on an international flight to and from Australia
on an Australian domestic sector which is operated by an international flight (QF1-399).
Note: The above restrictions do not apply for domestic travel within Australia on a domestic flight (QF400 and above).
We recommend passengers pack liquids, aerosols and gels exceeding 100ml/3.3oz in your checked baggage wherever possible.
The Federal Government has introduced a change to the Aviation Transport Security Regulations to allow a number of items that were previously prohibited.
From 25 December 2009 the following items may now be taken through security screening points and into the sterile area of airports within Australia:
umbrellas with metal points
knitting and crochet needles
pointed metal nail files (including nail clippers)
corkscrews, and
racquets used in squash, tennis, badminton or any other sport."
There's no need to ring Qantas, just print out the relevant bit from their website if you are concerned their staff might not know the rules.
