milage / status run is doable in NZ with air nz. they used to have (real) $1 grab-a-seat domestic flights which earns status credits (no AP).

if you want to maintain status, keep an eye on the grab-a-seat website, every now and then (cheap-ish) fares do come up. whether it's worth the time / money / hassle may well depend on you.

the "golden" route (for milage run) to somewhere in the pacific has been discussed so it's worth it to do a search on this forum.
