I *think* in the USA they earn points with the v cheap fare as well. Hence. I read that in EU they might have blocked some of the cheapish booking classes.
Like United Airlines only block O I X which I think are the award seats or the free upgrades? I don't know too much about it in NZ but I heard in the USA if you have top tier status you could get free upgrades as well. Like on a transcontinental flight. I think it has changed now but in the past at least, with top tier status you could get double points even on the rock bottom flights for their mile runs.
Asia and NZ non existent.
How I sort of look at it is that to get a free reward which is what I mainly look for. I guess I can settle (break-even) by paying 20-25% more for the flight to earn points at least that it is better quality/comfort than the low cost carriers and I get the status privileges. But then again if a grab a seat is half price, hands down
