At MAN, the selection is almost entirely machine-based. If you beep the WTMD in the backscatter lane(s) or are randomly selected (and I believe it's 1 in 4 that it's set to) then it's backscatter for you.

I have not been there in almost a year so I don't know how many safe lanes there are nowadays.
