I never go to the Post Office for my passport. I don't like dealing with multiple layers. If I ever could be without my passport for more than 2 weeks (not likely), I would send directly to the Passport Agency. As it is, I just go in.
You Canucks have WAY too many rules about passport photos. The no smile thing is especially lame. Passport photos is one place where the US seems to be better behaved that other countries. No problem with smiles.
(bolding mine) I walked in to renew mine at the Passport Agency just acouple years ago. No smiles allowed, had to go back to get new photos from AAA (who weren't aware of the 'prohibition'). No mention of ears, and I was wearing my hair long enough to cover them in both sets of photos (smiling and un-smiling).
Interestingly, the website said I could submit a written request for additional pages with my renewal request. The agent said it wasn't allowed, never heard of such a thing, but he'd go ahead and include the request (hand-written, no less). My new passport came back with 48 pages.
