Actually, even if people were picking seats on their own, I wouldn't be surprised if this were some sort of "minimum entropy" solution where no one wanted to be seated next to someone else.

Since people are involved and it's not just random, you can't do your standard combinatoric probabilities. This really is a game theoretic problem.
