Talking Brilliant & Ridiculous Cabin Temperature Discussion With Cabin Crew

Hows this for a strange explanation of cabin temperature?

Myself and a colleague came back on VIE to LHR tonight and the cabin really was swelteringly hot. Everyone was reaching for the air vents and once the drinks service started, I heard at least 4 people in the rows in front ask for it to be turned down.

I heard the CC girl say to a couple of them, "I'm sorry but cabin crew don't have any control of this on the Airbus like we used to on the Boeing's, the temperature is set by the flight deck. We will ask the pilots but it's entirely up to them"

Now as one boards the Airbus NB aircraft, at the front on the left is a control panel with cabin temperature controls. So when the CC girl got to me, I also asked if the temperature could be turned down and got the same response. So I asked her what that big panel is for with cabin temperature controls on it by the front-door and she just paused, stared at me before saying "For security reasons I cannot discuss the controls of the aircraft with you"

So out of curiosity, I made an excuse to use the C cabin loo (is normally allowed if the Y cabin aisle is blocked by a trolley) and glanced at the cabin temperature controls. There were two dials IIRC and both were set to 25C - no wonder the cabin was so hot! So I asked the CC member in the C cabin whether the temperature could be turned down a bit and pointed to the 25C settings on the panel and he said "sure, yes it is a bit hot, we were about to do it".

So what a strange respinse by the CC girl in the Y cabin, obviously was not off-the-cuff as I heard her say it to a couple of others before me. Maybe she just CBA to do anything about it
