The most intrusive and insensitive security I have ever experienced is in the US, but generally, European security is professional and courteous. I have never seen anything like you describe at a European airport and frankly find what they did to your husband outrageous.
I agree the private jets are the answer, but not terrible eco-conscious, I'm afraid!
