I might want to change the 3rd flight (of 4) which is now booked for April. I am getting conflicting information about date changes on award tickets. Do I need to make this change before I start the trip in February, or can I change the date for the 3rd flight prior to the date of this flight. If the 3rd flight is in April, can I make the change some time in March, although by that time I will already have started the trip?

Also, if at the time of purchasing the ticket, the change rules were differnet - which rules apply?

I remember that last year date changes for award tickets were free of charge as long as they are done online. If I check on the BA site now it tells me that there is $40 fee for date changes, but it is not clear if that also applies to online changes or only changes over the phone.
