Welcome to "The Triangle". I live "near" Durham (commute to Research Triangle Park for work), but I am not familiar enough with the "good" and "bad" neighborhoods to give you much advice.

I can't give you much advice about job hunting either - I've been employed by the same company for almost 28 years now. If you don't mind the commute to Greensboro (GSO), I thought I heard somebody in your industry (FexEx, UPS, ?) what planning on putting a mini-hub of some sort into that airport. I don't know whether it got off the ground or is still in the planning stages though.

As for airlines, Delta has a fairly strong presence here (with mainline to ATL and CVG and commuters elsewhere) as does US Airways (my current favorite with mainline to their hubs and commuters to quite a few other destinations). Southwest has done good things for the airfares on many routes, but I don't fly them. American presence came back in the form of (mostly) American Eagle. Most other airlines fly exclusively to their hubs from RDU.
