Travel voucher rip-off

Hi,
Almost a year ago I was denied boarding for a booked flight and received a travel voucher. While the old Continental vouchers can be redeemed via the web, customer service told me that I will have to go to a ticket office to use the United one (at least here in the UK). So, I made a 65mile trip to Heathrow Airport only to find out that the exact same itinerary that I found on the United website, and which wanted to book, is about US$180 more expensive at the ticket desk. The desk clerk said that he cannot get a better price hence the voucher became almost useless!
What a rip-off!
I contacted CS and am awaiting a reply...

Would it be worth trying to get a refund for the booked ticket and rebooking via the web? The flights are in October, so there is still plenty of availability.
