If anyone you know has a Chase Sapphire Preferred, you can transfer 1000 UR points to her account, and these post more or less instantly. Other than that, transferring between accounts owned by different people come with a fee, as you've discovered.

Another option I'd suggest is sign her up for United MP Dining. They have a new member promo for 1000mi for a $50 dine. But ANY dine will give her some miles into her MP account (usually within about 2-3 weeks).
