Thanks QBK! That would explain what happened and makes total sense. I'll still bring this to United's attention because, under that scenario, I still qualified for an upgrade. I did ask the GA about it but was denied without adequate explanation, and he did not offer to split my PNR. Now, maybe the GA couldn't do anything about it from the gate, but that would point to a system problem, which is still a problem. My simple position is that an upgrade should have been offered and was not, so that's my case. We'll see what happens!
