Yeah the machines do accept national ID cards..however its always a puzzele to get it in. You should put it in the same slot as were you put your passport in usually. Make sure you put the side up were the code is written. (this is a long computer kinda code underneath your information. The Dutch National ID has it on the back) and make sure you put it in the center of the slot and then it'll work.
My question was about online check-in rather than using a machine... and I was curious to know if I should reply "yes" or "no" to the passport question (i.e., whether or not "no" would generate another question, "Do you have a national ID card"). I decided to play safe and say "yes".
