Were they Aanytime or Milesaaver? I suspect they were Aanytime.
For that, you would just need seats that are available for sale, no restrictions on getting the awards as long as there are seats available for sale.. Additionally, you get free bags, priority seating, priority boarding, etc, when flying coach on Aanytime awards.
