This is just a continuation of what they have done in T3 for years: A1-6, B7-22, C24-41. Gates are numbered according to the specific pier the gate is located in, hence D,E,F for Piers D,E,F in T1.
Except the way they are doing it doesn't make sense because domestic flights operate from pier D and E, US from E and F, and international from F.
